Are You a Mary or a Martha-At Home with Mary and Martha Luke 10:38-42

Are you a Mary or a Martha?

What does that exactly mean? On our “Getting Your Priorities Straight” episode from The Original Force Podcast, Nickie talks about Mary and Martha from Luke 10:38-42.

Stop and take a look around your house. Can you imagine if Jesus showed up with his disciples at your front door to visit with you right now? Is your house nice, neat, and organized or a mess? Do you have any food to offer Jesus and his disciples for a special feast or is all you have are some stale peanuts and cold pizza? Would you act in a panic or fall to your knees?

The two sisters acted just the opposite when Jesus knocked on their door. Martha went into a complete panic mode by cleaning, preparing a meal, and mad because her sister Mary was not helping her. Instead Mary sat at Jesus's feet and listened intently to everything the Lord had to say and not caring one bit about the house. Martha actually went up to Jesus in destress and asked him to tell Mary to help her;

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42

Mary’s priorities pleased Jesus. Mary knew to put everything aside because Jesus was her number one priority. Jesus told Martha not to worry with the trivial things. Her priorities were not cleaning and cooking but to pay attention to the Lord, who would guide her.

We have all been Martha’s at times. We forget in our busy lives that our number one priority is God. If you make God your first priority everyday than everything else will fall into place.

God's priority is to look after all of his children, which is all of us! Therefore, our number one priority should be Him!

Your spiritual challenge this week is to ask yourself:

“Am I acting like a Mary or a Martha?”

Turn to your bibles tonight and read Luke 10:38-42 to read the full passage.

Happy Thinking!

Blessings from your Original Force Team!
