How to Stay Spiritually Healthy

I believe in a healthy lifestyle. I teach my family how to be healthy, eat right, exercise, stay positive and happy. However, there is one element to optimal health and happiness that I believe is so important, but often overlooked. It is the most important factor in my daily life and that is staying healthy spiritually.

Staying healthy spiritually is communicating to Jesus deep within your soul. Your spirit is the essence of happiness, wholeness and health. The Holy Spirt talks to us daily, but you have to learn to listen. How cool is that? We really have a direct line to God that will bring peace and joy if you ask for it. Genesis 2:7 says, “Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” Genesis 1:26 states that God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.” These two passages actually mean God breathed his spirit into each of us and we too are spiritual beings.

We live in a very fast pace world and it is sometimes really hard to think about Jesus. Sometimes I even get taken up in daily stress and then remember to use my gift of spiritual thinking. The other day I was in 5 o’clock rush hour traffic trying to get my little boy to his soccer game. There seemed to be more traffic than usual and I felt the worry of not getting my son to his game on time. I then started to stress over going to the grocery store and making dinner after his game and then I started to wish he did not even play soccer! That is what stress can do to you. This is when I realized I needed Jesus to help me through with some spiritual thinking. When you directly talk to the Lord you do have the expectation that the Holy Sprit is going to answer and your prayer dialogue. Through the Holy Sprit, Jesus will answer back. If you do not hear Him within you then you are not at peace. The whole idea of becoming healthy spiritually is to reach that peace in your heart through Jesus. This is why spiritual exercises are so important. A fit spirit makes a healthy, happy, and blessed person.

”Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid"(John 14:27).

Jesus is known for spreading peace to all because He is the Prince of Peace. Realizing you are one with Jesus is all your soul needs.

The first step to having a fit spirit is to start out and silently tell Jesus about your day. He will listen to you. If something is troubling you Jesus will comfort you. If you feel that you are so stretched with time and feel guilty not spending enough time with your family, talk to God about how to slow down. If you are tired the Holy Spirit will guide you back to Jesus and give you rest. When you are overwhelmed asked Jesus to give you peace.

When I arrived at my son’s soccer game I felt refreshed and at peace. I watched his soccer game with a smile and deep thankfulness as he scored for his team!
